Granum critical of timing of provincial snap election

DELTA, B.C. — Melissa Granum, Delta Mayoral candidate, is criticizing the provincial government’s decision to call a provincial election during the municipal election campaign, saying it demonstrates a lack of respect for the importance of local

government.

“Municipal elections matter. They are about the decisions that directly shape the communities where people live, work and raise their families. Putting a provincial election on top of an already active municipal election makes it harder for voters to focus on the local issues and candidates they are being asked to choose,” said Granum.

“This is more than a scheduling issue. It reflects a broader pattern of the provincial government not respecting the role of local government or giving municipalities the voice they deserve.”

Granum pointed to several provincial decisions that she says have demonstrated that disconnect, including Bill 44 and the province’s sweeping changes to municipal planning authority, the cancellation of a proposed long-term-care facility in Delta, and discussions surrounding a proposed pipeline terminus in Delta that she says took place without adequate local government involvement or knowledge.

“Delta is not an afterthought. Decisions made in Victoria have real consequences here, and municipalities need to be partners in those decisions, not simply informed after the fact.”

Granum said the overlapping elections create additional confusion for voters and place another burden on the municipal democratic process.

“Local government is where decisions about our neighbourhoods, roads, infrastructure, development, recreation and community services are made. Residents deserve the opportunity to have a clear conversation about the future of Delta without that conversation being overshadowed by a provincial campaign.”

“After years of provincial decisions increasingly reaching into municipal jurisdiction, this is yet another hit to local government. It is time for municipalities to be treated as partners, with a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their communities.”
