Statement from Mayoral Candidate Melissa Granum
Delta has clearly lost credibility at the negotiating table and as a result, our residents have spent years sitting in traffic, staring at piles of dirt and the tattered remains of abandoned road work to and from the Massey tunnel. Millions of dollars were spent preparing for a bridge crossing that simply evaporated.
George Harvie was one of the mayors responsible for that waste of money. He publicly abandoned his commitment to a bridge crossing back in 2019, and instead threw his support behind a tunnel. A tunnel that has no completion date in sight.
Seven years later, all we have to show for it is more piles of dirt and half of Deas Island destroyed. Delta’s current council has not held a steady line on securing a new crossing since 2019, something that seems impossible now that they cannot even work together at the Council table. Mr. Kruger calling for a third party review of what happened will point back to the origins of this mess, Delta Council supporting the cancellation of a bridge years ago.
Our elected officials are too busy infighting and have become unable to lead our city. This is nothing short of failed leadership.
