Former Delta Mayors, Police Chief and community leaders unite behind Melissa Granum’s Mayoral bid
Delta, B.C. — A growing coalition of respected Delta political, public safety and community leaders is throwing its support behind Melissa Granum’s campaign for Mayor of Delta this fall, signalling a broad call for experienced, accountable and community focused leadership at City Hall.
Former Delta mayors Lois Jackson and Beth Johnson, former Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford, former Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, and retired firefighter and Delta farmer John Burr have endorsed Granum and the Delta First team. The endorsements bring together figures with deep roots in Delta’s civic life, local government, public safety and agriculture.
For Granum, a senior public sector leader with nearly two decades of governance and leadership experience, the backing represents a significant vote of confidence in her judgment, qualifications and ability to bring people together. Entering the race with an independent perspective and a record of leadership outside elected office, Granum offers Delta voters a fresh approach to City Hall.
“During my time as Mayor and chair of the Delta Police Board, I worked with Melissa Granum for 10 years,” said Lois Jackson, former Mayor of Delta. “She consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to good governance. Melissa never shied away from asking the tough questions, holding the organization to the highest standards, and always putting the public interest first.”
Jackson said Delta needs “a mayor with her experience, sound judgment, and proven ability to lead through complex challenges.”
Granum’s campaign is focused on bringing a fresh perspective to City Hall, increasing accountability and ensuring residents are heard on the issues affecting their neighbourhoods, families and businesses.
The growing list of endorsements suggests that support for Granum is extending across traditional political and community lines.
“Melissa is the kind of leader who truly listens and genuinely cares about people,” said John Burr, a retired firefighter and Delta farmer. “She’s approachable, hardworking, and always follows through. I especially appreciate her strong support for our farmers and first responders, and her commitment to standing up for everyday people.”
Former independent Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said Granum has the skills Delta needs in its next mayor.
“Melissa is a highly experienced and capable leader,” Huntington said. “She is authentic, intelligent and collaborative and, most importantly, she listens. I am proud to endorse Melissa Granum for Mayor. She will represent everyday residents and fight for our city.”
Cessford, one of Canada’s longest serving police chiefs, worked with Granum for a decade at the Delta Police Department and said she has demonstrated leadership under pressure.
“I had the privilege of working with Melissa for 10 years at DPD and saw firsthand her exceptional leadership, unwavering commitment to public safety, and ability to successfully manage highly complex issues,” Cessford said. “She is a thoughtful, principled leader who brings people together, makes sound decisions, and always puts the community first.”
Former Mayor Beth Johnson described Granum as “a breath of fresh air in local government.” “Our community deserves a leader who is both highly qualified and genuinely connected to the people she serves,” Johnson said. “I believe Melissa is that leader.”
Together, the endorsements reinforce a central message of Granum’s campaign, Delta’s next mayor can benefit from experienced leadership, an independent perspective and a record of putting the public interest first.
